Throughout the year the Rifugio Della Rocca organizes classical music concerts, in collaboration with maestro Orazio Tuccella’s Officina Musicale ensemble, and literary and scientific lectures.

Art and Culture

Rocca Calascio, with its castle, church and village, the nearby historical and artistic treasures, the entire district between the towns of L’Aquila and Sulmona offers innumerable sight-seeing attractions. The history of the castle and its village, on the border of the territories of these two towns, coincides with that of the Carapelle Barony, that in the second half of the Renaissance built many civil and ecclesiastical buildings, thanks to the riches due to its thriving trade in wool. Rocca Calascio is also the historical building standing at the highest altitude in the Pennines, built in the middle ages to overlook the territory.

Summer

It is easy to explore the Gran Sasso district with the walking tours starting from the Rocca. The Rifugio is the starting point for footpaths that go to the neighbouring villages or to Campo Imperatore, and the peaks of the Gran Sasso are easily reached in a car. The wonderful vegetation of the Park, among the richest in Italy, the great plateaux and the Dolomitic peaks, or a less demanding outing to the nearby villages, stopping to taste the famous arrosticini, everything is near to hand. And how better to end the day than in admiring the sunset from the castle?

Winter

To stay in Rocca Calascio in the winter months is an unforgettable experience. Everything is white, covered in snow, and only the wind blows through the castle ruins, the sunset turns the snowy tops of the Gran Sasso pink; then you realize that a holiday at the Rocca is a very special thing. You can take a walk on the snow with the traditional “Ciaspole” (snowshoes), or spend the day skiing cross-country, or face the more difficult climb of Monte Camicia on Skis, so as to savour the thrill of the most famous descent in the Pennines. All this is a stone’s throw from the Rifugio. For those who love alpine skiing, the Campo Imperatore ski resorts are only an hour distant, and those who prefer to relax have a rich choice of artistic beauties to visit, typical food to savour, and cultural events, not least the classical music concerts held in the Rifugio itself.
